Shammys are another hybrid class in WOW. Fun to level up and nice to play both in pve and pvp, Shamans are one of the popular classes players choose. When The Burning Crusade expansion came out Shamans gained their popularity on the Alliance side with the new race called the Draenei, which is the only class on the Alliance side that can be a Shaman. If you are a Horde Shaman you can choose between Orcs, Tauren and Trolls.
Specs and Totems
Shamans can spec to be dps casters, melee dpsers or healers by choosing Elemental, Enhancement or Restoration tree. In pvp they are usually melee or healers while in pve you can also find many elemental Shammys. Similar to Druids, Shamans are good in everything but you can’t really say that a Shaman is the best melee dps, healer or a caster. They are a bit of everything. What makes them special and desirable in groups/raids are their Totems. Totems are an enhancement for a group and they have different purposes depending on the need.
Healing Shamans can cast a Mana Tide Totem and all the healers and dps casters in his group are going to love him for it. This Totem restores about 24% of the max mana to the party members in range of 30 yards.
Elemental Shamans have improved Fire Totems which do a lot of dps but what makes them special is the Totem of Wrath. This totem gives 3% crit chance to all party members and also gives +100 spellpower to all casters. An Elemental Shaman should definitely be placed in a group with dps casters.
Enhancement Shamans are melee damage dealers. What really helps when it comes to totems is the Windfury Totem. All melee classes love this totem because it increases melee haste aka speed of melee attacks. When this is active, all melee classes just see the numbers rain off the enemy!

Useful talents
While leveling a Shammy it is always nice to spare few talent points on the Enhancement tree, starting with 5 points on Ancestral Knowledge which will increase your Intellect and then 2 points in Improved Ghost Wolf. All Shamans can shapeshift to a Ghost Wolf but the spell takes time to cast. With just 2 points in this talent your Ghost Wolf spell will be instant. It is nice to level up as an Enhancement Shaman since you will require a lot less mana for your spells/skills, will have a nice amount of damage and more armor since Shamans wear mail, while if you choose to level up as an Elemental Shaman you will have to wear cloth for dps casters. Hybrid builds are also nice while leveling since some skills in one tree enhance some skills in other trees.
What’s really nice about Shamans is that if in trouble they can heal up without shapeshifting(which a Druid must do). They can also use Chain Heal which will heal more targets at the same time. Of course, this spell gains its actual power if the Shaman is speced as Resto.
All Shamans get some mutual skills, i.e. Ancestral Spirit which is a resurrection spell for friendly targets. Water Walking, a spell that allows a Shaman and friends to walk on water for 10 minutes is also quite useful as well as Water Breathing. Astral Recall is a skill all other classes envy Shamans for. This serves similar to a Hearthstone with a cooldown of only 15 minutes. Basically you will have another form of Hearthstone but with a lesser cooldown.
Another very useful skill is Reincarnation, popularly called “Ankh” because it uses ankhs as reagents. Similar to Druids Combat Rez, this skill allows a Shaman to resurrect only himself upon death. At a later level Shamans also get the ability to summon a Fire and Earth Elemental to fight for them and they get the spell called Heroism. This spell gives all party members a 30% haste bonus for 40 seconds, increasing the healing and the damage output significantly.
