Rogue Class - Damage dealer from the shadows

If you think that a Rogue is just a heavy damage dealer that can go in stealth and make sushi out of enemies, and can only be used to make a big mess in battles… you are right! Even though he does have some abilities to aid a group or raid, his main purpose is to use his Daggers, Swords, Fist Weapons or Maces to deal a lot of damage, either on other players or on mobs. While being able to dual wield, a Rogue sure is one of the main damage dealers that can be found in the World of Warcraft.

Rogues use Energy for their abilities. Energy recovers quite quickly and can be used for some attacks that apply combo points on a mob or player. The Rogue also has several finishing moves that have a bigger effect when the target has more combo points on him. The combo points are removed after the use of a finishing attack or when the rogue applies a combo point on another mob or player. The Rogues, dependent on leather armor, are known to be masters of the shadow, which allows them to stealth. This is great for PvP purposes but is also handy in PvE because, combined with the Sap ability, which can be used out of combat to give a target a concussion which will keep him out of the battle for up to 60 seconds, he can also provide a party or raid with a crowd control ability.

A feature only available for Rogues is that they can apply several different poisons on their weapons, increasing their damage output or giving de-buffs to their enemy. The Rogue can be played by: Humans, Gnomes, Dwarves, Night Elves, Blood Elves, Trolls, Orcs, and Undead.

The Rogue, like all other classes, has three talent trees. However, unlike most of the other classes, the Rogues should adjust their talent build to their own play style. The three trees all provide nice abilities and enhancements to the abilities they already have. Depending on which abilities you prefer, it is advisable that you try out several builds to see what fits your style best. Below I described some of the abilities a Rogue can choose from.

Assassination

It doesn’t even matter which build you make, 5 points in Malice are a must. Increasing your critical strike rating with 5% is just too sweet. Next to offering more talents that increase your critical strike rating, the Assassination tree also focuses on the poison aspect of the Rogues, increases the effect of the poisons, and giving additional critical strike rating while a poison is active. At a later level they receive the Mutilate attack which allows them to instantly attack their target with both weapons and some added bonus damage.

Combat

Dual Wield Specialization is a must for every Rogue and can be found all the way on top of the Combat talent tree, which also makes it attractive for each player to put 5 points in it. Combat offers the opportunity for a player to specialize in a specific weapon, whether it be Daggers, Swords, or Maces, it is definitely worth to choose either one of them, depending on which weapons you have and which enhancement you like. Do note that spending points in enhancing all 3 weapons will be a waste of points. Next to some other great talents, including Killing Spree which allows the Rogue to jump to another target and deal massive damage in a short period of time, the Combat tree also gives a boost to the Energy regeneration of a Rogue.

Subtlety

Subtlety focuses more on the survivability, stealth and crowd control of the Rogue. Don’t get me wrong though, this tree gives the Rogue several abilities that give him extra bonus combo points on his targets which allow him to do a big amount of damage in a short period of time. Together with Hemorrhage, a powerful attack that has the Rogue do more damage on following attacks, this is probably the reason why PvP Rogues like this build.

Try 'em All

It doesn’t matter what you intend to play, PvP or PvE, I would definitely recommend trying out several builds so you can see what fits your play style best.
