When you enter the lore of Azeroth you will find many factions that give reputation and also opposing factions where a player needs to make a choice depending on his needs. You can earn reputation by completing various quests and dungeons, by killing mobs, doing repeatable quests for the faction npcs and yet some reputations you can only maximize by going to 10 man or 25 man raids. A player can be hated, neutral, friendly, honored, revered or exalted with each faction.

In the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade expansion players got to choose from two opposing factions found in the expansion’s capital, Shattrath city. Those two factions are Aldor and Scryer. Rewards for the exalted reputation were depending on which faction you chose. Getting exalted with either is not really easy since you need to do many of the faction quests and collect reputation tradable items. Other faction reputations varied on the quests as well and were obtainable in certain dungeons. In Wrath of the Lich King players got an advantage to get their reputation to exalted with a certain faction fairly easy by buying the factions tabard and wearing it in any of the level 80 dungeons.

The choice of the faction you want to get to exalted is yours only and it depends upon the class and build you play. When you hit exalted, some factions have better rewards for healers, some better for tanks and some better for dps classes. There are also nice profession rewards for blacksmiths, engineers, jewelcrafters, leatherworkers and tailors.

One of the advantages of being exalted with major alliance or horde factions are the mounts you would be able to buy and ride. The major alliance and horde factions are based on the capital cities of the races. For alliance there is Darnassus for night elves, Stormwind for humans, Ironforge for dwarfs, Gnomeregan Exiles for gnomes and Exodar for draenei. For horde there is Thunder Bluff for tauren , Darkspear Trolls for trolls, Ogrimmar for orcs, Undercity for undead and Silvermoon City for blood elves.

If you are a gnome i.e. getting exalted rep with Darnassus would mean that you would be able to buy and ride a nice saber mount while for the horde side i.e. a good looking blood elf could look even better while riding a nice raptor mount.

With the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion getting exalted reputation with factions got another meaning since it is not only the rewards that matter, there are many achievements that require exalted state with certain factions and also the amount of exalted reputations now counts. By getting five exalted reputations you earn one achievement, then twenty five and so on… These count as one of the harder achievements to accomplish, simple because they are time taking.

Getting reputations of various factions to exalted does mean a lot of nice rewards and improvements for your character but it also gets you a lot of nice achievements and other in game advantages. It gets you to know the game and its story line better.
